Every dancer wants greater flexibility.

Higher extensions, deeper splits and a more effortless arabesque are often treated as the key to better ballet technique. It is no surprise, then, that dancers spend hours stretching in pursuit of more range.

Yet many eventually encounter the same frustrating contradiction.

You can sit comfortably in the splits after class, but your développé remains much lower. Your teacher can lift your leg toward your ear, yet the moment the assistance disappears, your leg feels impossibly heavy.

The problem is not always a lack of flexibility.

It is often a gap between passive flexibility and active flexibility. Understanding that difference changes how dancers should train entirely.

What Is Passive Flexibility?

Passive flexibility is the range of motion you can access with external assistance. That assistance may come from:

  • Gravity
  • A teacher or partner
  • Your hands
  • A stretching strap
  • The floor
  • Momentum

Sitting in a front split is an example of passive flexibility. Gravity helps lower the pelvis while the floor supports your body.

Pulling your leg toward your head with your hand shows the same thing. Your hip can enter the position, but your muscles are not solely responsible for creating or sustaining it.

Passive flexibility tells you that your joints and surrounding tissues can tolerate a particular range. It does not tell you whether you can control that range independently.

What Is Active Flexibility?

Active flexibility is the range of motion you can create and control using your own muscles.

A développé à la seconde requires active flexibility. Your working leg must lift against gravity while your pelvis, standing leg and torso remain organised.

An arabesque also requires active flexibility. The muscles around the hip must move the leg behind the body while the trunk and supporting side control the forces created by the movement.

Active flexibility depends on:

  • Strength through the available range
  • Muscular coordination
  • Joint stability
  • Pelvic and spinal control
  • Balance
  • Proprioception
  • Nervous-system confidence

Passive flexibility gives you access to a position. Active flexibility determines whether you can use that position in your dancing.

Why Active Flexibility Matters in Ballet

Ballet does not simply ask dancers to enter extreme positions. It asks them to create those positions without assistance, sustain them under load and move in and out of them with control.

A high extension is not technically useful if it requires you to:

  • Throw the leg with momentum
  • Tilt or rotate the pelvis excessively
  • Flare the ribs
  • Arch through the lower back
  • Collapse into the standing hip
  • Lose turnout
  • Grip through the shoulders

The audience never sees the height your teacher can place your leg into. They see the range you can actively organise.

This is why flexibility and strength should not be treated as opposing qualities. The two must work together.

Why Does the Active–Passive Flexibility Gap Happen?

The gap usually develops because dancers spend far more time accessing range than strengthening it.

Stretching may improve passive range and increase tolerance to a position. The body, however, still needs enough strength and coordination to control that position without assistance.

Strength Is Reduced Near End Range

Muscles do not produce the same amount of force at every length.

Near the top of an extension, the muscles responsible for lifting the leg are working in mechanically demanding positions. Some are already shortened, while the opposing tissues are lengthened.

A dancer may have enough strength to lift the leg to 60 degrees but not enough strength to sustain it at 90 or 110 degrees without compensation.

The issue is not necessarily that the leg cannot travel farther. The body may simply be unable to produce enough force once it gets there.

The Nervous System Limits What It Does Not Trust

The nervous system continually evaluates whether a position feels stable, predictable and manageable.

When you move into a range you cannot confidently control, the body may respond by:

  • Increasing muscle tension
  • Reducing available range
  • Altering alignment
  • Recruiting compensatory muscles
  • Pulling you away from the position

This protective response can feel like tightness. But tightness does not always mean that a muscle needs more stretching. It may indicate that the body needs more strength, stability or confidence within that range.

Passive Stretching Does Not Train the Entire Skill

Holding a split and performing a développé are different tasks.

A passive stretch asks the body to tolerate a position. A développé asks the body to coordinate the working leg, standing leg, pelvis, core, foot, ankle and breath while maintaining balance.

This coordination is known as neuromuscular control. It improves through repeated, deliberate practice. Passive stretching alone cannot fully develop it.

Stability Creates Freedom

Many dancers assume stability will restrict their movement. In reality, stability creates the foundation from which movement becomes possible.

A controlled pelvis and stable torso allow the hip muscles to work from a reliable base. When that base is missing, the body creates apparent range by borrowing movement from the lower back or standing hip.

This may appear as:

  • Rib flare during a front extension
  • Pelvic hiking in à la seconde
  • Lumbar compression during arabesque
  • Rotation away from the working leg
  • Collapsing into the supporting side

The goal is not to hold the pelvis completely rigid. Ballet requires carefully controlled pelvic movement. The goal is to prevent compensation from replacing true, usable range.

Signs You Have a Passive–Active Flexibility Gap

You may have considerably more passive flexibility than active flexibility if:

  • You can sit in the splits but cannot sustain a high développé
  • Your teacher can lift your leg much higher than you can
  • Your extension reaches its peak, then drops immediately
  • Your pelvis hikes or rotates as the leg rises
  • Your turnout decreases at greater heights
  • Your ribs flare during front or side extensions
  • Your lower back takes over during arabesque
  • You rely on momentum to lift the leg
  • Your technique deteriorates significantly when you are tired

These signs do not automatically mean you need more stretching. They often mean your strength and control have not yet caught up with the range you already possess.

How to Train Active Flexibility

Improving active flexibility means teaching your body to produce force, maintain alignment and coordinate movement throughout its available range.

The goal is not simply to lift the leg higher. It is to make more of your flexibility usable.

1. Train End-Range Holds

Isometric holds are one of the simplest ways to build active flexibility.

Lift the leg into the highest position you can control without major compensation. Hold for approximately 10–20 seconds.

Focus on:

  • Length through the working leg
  • Stable pressure through the standing foot
  • Controlled pelvic position
  • Quiet ribs
  • Relaxed shoulders
  • Consistent turnout

The correct height is not the highest position you can briefly reach. It is the highest position you can genuinely organise.

2. Control the Descent

Most dancers train the lift and pay very little attention to the lowering phase.

Slow eccentric leg lowers teach the muscles to control the leg as they lengthen.

To practise:

  1. Use your hand, a strap or a teacher to place the leg slightly above your active range.
  2. Remove some or all of the assistance.
  3. Lower the leg slowly over four to eight seconds.
  4. Maintain your alignment for as long as possible.
  5. Stop when compensation begins.

This develops the strength that prevents an extension from dropping as soon as it reaches its peak.

3. Add Controlled Pulses

Active pulses should be small, slow and deliberate.

Move into a position you can control, then lift the limb a few centimetres against gravity.

Useful options include:

  • Seated pike leg lifts
  • Front-leg lifts from a lunge
  • Supported à la seconde pulses
  • Prone arabesque pulses
  • Active straddle lifts
  • Heel lifts from a split preparation

The goal is not speed or maximum height. The goal is to create muscular force inside your available range without using momentum.

4. Strengthen the Standing Leg

The working leg receives most of the attention, but the standing leg determines what is actually possible.

It must manage:

  • Balance
  • Foot and ankle stability
  • Knee alignment
  • Hip stability
  • Pelvic position
  • Turnout
  • Transfer of force through the torso

Useful exercises include:

  • Single-leg relevés
  • Slow calf raises
  • Split squats
  • Step-downs
  • Single-leg balances
  • Side-plank variations
  • Gluteus medius strengthening
  • Controlled fondu patterns

A stronger base gives the working leg somewhere reliable from which to move.

5. Train the Core to Control Compensation

The core does not need to hold the body rigid. Its role is to help manage the forces created by the moving limbs.

Active-flexibility training should teach the torso to resist unnecessary:

  • Rib flare
  • Rotation
  • Side bending
  • Lumbar extension
  • Pelvic shifting

Useful exercises include:

  • Dead bugs
  • Side planks
  • Pallof presses
  • Bird dogs
  • Controlled leg lowers
  • Standing resistance-band presses

The purpose is not to make the body stiff. It is to create a strong centre from which the limbs can move freely.

6. Strengthen the Entire Range

Dancers need strength at every stage of an extension:

  • At the beginning of the lift
  • Through the middle range
  • Near end range
  • During the hold
  • During the descent

Only training the highest position leaves gaps elsewhere. A combination of full-range strength work and specific end-range exercises is usually more effective than relying on one method alone.

7. Progress Gradually

End-range training is demanding. Progress may involve:

  • Holding the position for longer
  • Adding a small amount of resistance
  • Reducing assistance
  • Slowing the lowering phase
  • Improving alignment at the same height
  • Increasing the range slightly
  • Performing more controlled repetitions

Progress should not be measured only by leg height. Better control, reduced compensation and greater consistency are equally meaningful improvements.

How Often Should Dancers Train Active Flexibility?

For many dancers, two to four focused sessions each week are sufficient.

The correct frequency depends on:

  • Your age and training level
  • Class and rehearsal volume
  • Existing strength
  • Injury history
  • Exercise intensity
  • Sleep and recovery
  • Other conditioning work

More is not automatically better. Active-flexibility work creates muscular and nervous-system fatigue. Performing demanding end-range exercises every day may reduce training quality and interfere with class or rehearsal.

The most appropriate frequency is the amount from which you can recover while maintaining strong technique.

Common Active-Flexibility Mistakes

Stretching More When the Limitation Is Strength

If your passive range is already much greater than your active range, adding more passive flexibility may widen the gap. The range you already have needs support before you chase more.

Chasing Height at Any Cost

A higher leg is not always a better leg. If additional height comes from pelvic distortion, spinal compression or momentum, you are practising compensation rather than control.

Training Above Your Controllable Range

Lifting too high during strength exercises often shifts the load into the lower back, shoulders or standing hip. Training slightly lower with greater precision is usually more productive.

Ignoring the Standing Side

The foot, ankle, hip and trunk of the supporting side create the base for every extension. They are not secondary to the movement.

Training Without Recovery

Muscles and the nervous system adapt between sessions. Dancers must consider the total load created by class, rehearsals, performances and conditioning.

What About the Splits?

Being able to perform the splits does not guarantee a high extension.

A front split uses the floor and gravity for support. A standing extension requires one leg to move against gravity while the other supports the entire body.

These abilities are related, but they are not the same skill. Split training can remain part of a flexibility program, but it should be paired with active mobility and strength.
